What Are Fillings?

Fillings are restorations that repair and rebuild teeth that have been harmed by cavities. After removing the damaged portion of the tooth, the filling seals out bacteria and protects the tooth so that it can function normally.

Choices in Restorative Materials

Materials used for fillings may include composite (white fillings) or amalgam (silver fillings.) White fillings are more aesthetically pleasing and blends seamlessly into the teeth. Silver fillings tend to stand out a bit more, but are useful for hard to reach areas that can’t be easily isolated from saliva.

Amalgam fillings compared to composite fillings can have a longer life span in the mouth. Although amalgam fillings have been used for many years, and are safe to have, they do expand over time and increase the risk of the tooth cracking.

Composite fillings are more regularly used today. Composite fillings use a “bonding” technique and help to conserve as much tooth structure as possible while being nearly indistinguishable from your natural tooth.
